Hydrate – The Hangover Cure


Can it be that simple? Hydrate?

Plan A) keeping it simple with a”shake n go”:

Watermelon – Alkalise Green and Go smoothie ingredients

Watermelon – 2 cups / 300gm rich in potassium, Vitamin C and lycoprene, naturally good for flushing the body of acidity and free radicals.

Mint – 3 or so stems and gently pull all leaves off to use only the leaves. Tasty and helping to sooth stomach and digestion.

Fresh Lime – 1 lime freshly squeezed juice. Gently detoxing and flushing the kidneys.

Sea salt –  1/4 teaspoon Celtic or Himalayan are the best salts you need for anytime you use salt. Balanced in naturally occurring minerals, they help the body to hydrate on a cellular level, not drawing and holding fluids in amongst the tissues as with the usual sodium table salt.

Cucumber – peeled and sliced, any variety is fine however the softer skinned cucumbers are usually better. Half cup or 75–100 gm is fine. As with Watermelon, cucumbers are mostly water, and their electrolyte composition makes them natural isotonics. Cucumbers are very high in Vitamin C, K and potassium with naturally occurring copper.

Variations to experiment with

Apple Juice or sparkling mineral water as optional extra’s if you need a little fizz or natural sweetness. Generally though the watermelon will be sweet enough. Coconut Water is a favourite for many and is definitely high on the list for its hydrating abilities. Add into the original recipe instead of the Aloe Vera juice.

Preparation

Combine all ingredients in your blender and blend until smooth. (Noise alert – Severe hangover sufferers may want to wear headphones to muffle noise of blender!) You can add ice but preferably if your watermelon, cucumber and lime are from the fridge, this will be cold enough! If you add extra ice this may be too chilled and will make your blood and kidneys work harder again, so gentle now!

If you increase the recipe ingredients you will make enough to continue drinking all day or take mercy on your drinking buddies and share the recovery juice love.

Hydration is the secret to avoiding post exercise pain!

Plan A & B recipes are not only a Hangover cure but also a refreshing hydrating tonic after any practice such as yoga or gym, pilates, sports, cross training, etc Even if you are thinking ” I haven’t sweated much so I haven’t lost much body fluids” – think again. Any time you are burning energy – thinking, walking, talking, you need water in your cells, in your tissues, in your body to be energetic.

Tightness, tender and aching muscles are a sign of dehydration post exercise. Hydrate effectively and you experience less muscle soreness from flushing the residual toxins and acids formed when burning energy used in training and moving your body, which then means more energy and better recovery to go again! Training that is, not drinking!

It is always best to slowly come down & stretch post exercise to keeping the blood moving through – and there is always the ice bath!!! As well as hydration with H2O, a natural isotonic drink like our Plan A or B recipes here, will flush acidity and waste, oxygenate blood, provide concentrated plantbased nutrition that is easily absorbed and bio-available for maximum fitness.  Don’t forget, mental activity can be just as depleting as physical exercise so the importance of hydrating while at work is to be appreciated in balancing mental fatigue & stress. 

A big day outside or a long driving excursion can leave you depleted and tired. In the heat of Summer or simply those days you just know you haven’t had enough H2O to drink,  your skin, kidneys and brain are feeling it more than you realise. Dehydration is mentally fatiguing and worse, ageing – eek!

Most of us know our bodies are 70% water but many of us don’t think of how effectively we can renew our body fluids without using up more fluid than we are putting in. For example, our daily cup or cups of coffee. For every cup of coffee we need to drink on average 4 glasses of water to balance the dehydrating effects of the 1 cup of coffee. Soft drinks and especially carbonated energy drinks with caffeine content, are the same if not more demanding on how much water we drink to balance the effects these babies have on our systems.
